This workshop will help you make learning library skills fun for kids! Mom’s Choice Award Winning Author Jason Edwards, a licensed and certified educator with over 20 years of experience creating innovative ways to inspire and instruct children, guides participants through the process of producing inventive, hands-on learning exercises that teach and develop the skills children need in order to find books and information in the library. Edwards will demonstrate how to identify appropriate goals, select methods, produce materials, and carry out exciting activities that teach kids vital research skills including identifying and distinguishing the content of different sections of the library, how to use the Library Catalog, finding books of different subjects using the Dewey Decimal System, and how to perform Internet searches. The model used to exemplify activity construction will be Jason’s signature Monster Hunt program, in which teams of adventurers learn library skills as they track down and capture a lurking monster! Edwards will show how to tailor programs to groups of differing ages and levels of ability, and how to integrate many AASL educational goals into the programs generated including the building of reasoning, organization, and team-building skills. He will also review how to work together with other departments to incorporate broader learning goals into your program.
